Are 3D modeling studios going to disappear?

Text-to-3D, image-to-3D: these tools generate an object in seconds. Here's what they actually do well, what they still lack for professional use, and how we actually use AI in our own modeling and rendering pipeline.

A prompt, a 3D object in ten seconds: text-to-3D and image-to-3D generation tools impress on the first try. They fuel a question we get asked more and more often: if AI can generate a 3D model on its own, what's the point of a modeling studio anymore? The honest answer: it depends entirely on what you want to do with the model afterward.

The real question: replace or equip?

This isn't the first time a new tool has raised fears that a craft would disappear. Real-time rendering was supposed to replace offline rendering, asset libraries were supposed to replace custom modeling. In both cases, the tool changed the way of working, not the need for expertise to get a usable result. Generative 3D AI is following the same trajectory: it changes the available tooling, it doesn't replace the judgment needed to use it correctly.

Its limits for professional use

The compromise becomes a problem as soon as the model needs to serve more than a preview: an e-commerce configurator, a product page that must match exactly what the customer receives, a catalog with dozens of variants that need to stay consistent with each other, or a piece optimized to run in real time in a browser or an augmented reality app.

The mesh and catalog-consistency problem

Three limitations come up consistently when you look at an AI-generated model from a professional angle:

  1. Topology: the mesh produced by a generative tool is rarely clean. Random triangulation, inconsistent polygon density, poorly unwrapped UVs. For a single still render, it might not show. For animation, real time or 3D printing, it creates concrete problems (deformations, file weight, loading times).
  2. Catalog consistency: generating an object once gives a good one-off result. Generating dozens of colorways and sizes of the same product, with proportions and materials rigorously identical from one variant to the next, is a different problem, one that current generative tools don't solve reliably.
  3. Art direction: a generative tool chooses the lighting, proportions and framing for you. On an object where brand identity matters (a furniture range, packaging, a medical device), that automatic interpretation becomes a risk rather than a time saver.
An AI-generated model can look convincing as a showcase piece. The real test isn't the first image, it's the tenth variant of the same product, rendered with exactly the same precision.

How we use AI at Lampyre

We don't rule out AI, we use it where it genuinely adds value: after modeling, not in place of it.

The 3D model is still built by hand: clean topology, UV mapped, exact dimensions from your drawings or product photos. It's this model, integrated into the 3DVue configurator, that guarantees a color or material variant stays rigorously identical to the previous one.

Once the real-time renders are pulled from the configurator (every color of a sofa, every colorway of a light fixture), we feed them back into our internal AI pipeline to produce photorealistic packshots or staged scenes. The difference from a one-off use of a consumer tool: we process an entire catalog of variants at once, with a consistent result from one image to the next.

A consumer text-to-3D tool remains relevant for fast prototyping or exploring an idea. It doesn't replace a studio as soon as the model needs to serve a demanding professional use: catalog consistency, real-time optimization, brand fidelity. Rarely as is. Most text-to-3D tools produce a mesh that needs substantial manual cleanup (retopology, UV mapping, optimization) before it can run properly in a real-time configurator or an augmented reality app.
Will AI eventually replace manual modeling?
For professional use with consistency and optimization requirements, that's not the direction current tools are heading: they're improving generation speed, not fine control over the result. What's the difference between your pipeline and a consumer AI tool?
